The sense of place of a wine and the aromatic signature of the Tedeschi cru.
According to Tedeschi, research and experimentation are not only essential instruments to guarantee quality in production but also a duty owed to the land of origin.
For the family, the meaning of research – which is also the meaning of the volume “The sense of place of a wine and the aromatic signature of the Tedeschi Cru” – is about always being on the frontline for the promotion and support of projects linked to one’s own territory. This vocation led to the first collaboration in 2017 with the Department of Biotechnology at the University of Verona and with Professor Maurizio Ugliano, to launch a study on the aromatic characterization of Valpolicella. This pioneering research serves as a point of departure for stimulus and reflection on the whole area and beyond.
Knowing the territory, selecting the ideal vineyard, and working the grape to release its maximum potential: this is the meaning of the place of a wine and respect for the territory, this is Tedeschi.
In September 2021, the first results from a study on the aromatic model of the grape varieties of Valpolicella, Corvina, and Corvinone, as well as on the characteristics of the different cru vineyards, particularly Monte Olmi, La Fabriseria, and the Maternigo Estate (Anfiteatro, Bàrila and Impervio vineyards) were released with the objective of basing the definition of terroir more strongly on the geographic identity of the region.
In 2024 results from the second part of the project were obtained. These results provided more details on what has come to be defined as “the aromatic signature of a wine,” clarified what it is, and described its evolution over time. The results identified four main olfactory dimensions for Valpolicella wines: fruity, balsamic, spiced/peppery, sweet spice. This new knowledge will allow the optimization of every single parcel of the vineyard, confirming that the Amarone is a terroir wine, with rare complexity, body, and elegance.
