Maternigo

The vineyard in the zone and DOC of Valpolicella between the communities of Tregnago and di Mezzane di Sotto.

  • Range: approximately 34 hectares
  • Altitude: 290-480 m asl
  • Exposure: southeast to southwest
  • Form of winegrowing: guyot and Veronese pergola
  • Terrain:  From a geological perspective, the area lays in part on grey and rose-colored marl limestone and in part on white and rose Cretaceous marl. The land is marly limestone endowed with abundant skeleton. The presence of limestone varies in the different pedological units, but is very abundant, permitting elevated aroma. The richness of iron oxide and manganese in the terrain favors great structure, longevity of the wines, intense color and salinity, in addition to a complex aroma characterized by spice scents of torrefaction, tobacco, plum, and black cherry. The sandy fraction together with the silicates and feldspars provide notes of red currant and raspberry. The position of the Estate is characterized by good ventilation (hillside and valley breeze), which favors an excellent temperature range that translates into richness in phenols and good aroma of the grapes.

In the Maternigo Estate, the choice of terrain for planting the vineyards was made after accurate zonation and characterization studies of the soil. Each plan is continuously monitored, and the grapes are selected and worked to obtain the maximum expression of the Cru. The vines planted are those that are classic to Valpolicella.

The Impervio vineyard, the name of which derives from the steepness of the incline, gives rise to the Valpolicella Superiore Maternigo, while the Barila parcel is particularly suited for the production of the Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva Maternigo Cru.

The other parcels of the Estate have been designated for the production of the winery’s other red wines.

Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG Riserva

The power of the earth, the character of the mother

The Amarone originates from the Barila vineyard, selected because of its production of grapes that are particularly rich in structure and have a high concentration of natural aromatic compounds ranging from red fruit notes to mediterranean floral scents, to the fresh notes of eucalyptus that highlight the intense perception of cinnamon and clove.
